“We are restless. In our collective we really strive to outdo ourselves all the time. We just like to keep busy!”. Kakkmaddafakka (Axel Vindenes, Pål Vindenes, Stian Sævig, Kristoffer Wie van der Pas, Lars Helmik Raaheim-Olsen, Sebastian Kittelsen) work hard on maintaining their reputation as one of music’s unstoppable objects. The band released albums in consecutive years in 2016 and 2017, went out on a touring schedule across Europe in 2017 and 2018 that would defeat a lesser band and balanced side-projects like PISH, all while maintaining their trademark firework energy and spectacular live shows without any sign of slowing down. And any slowdown isn’t on the horizon yet, as they’re already kicking off the campaign for another album with the single ‘Naked Blue’. “We started straight after we released (2017 album HUS)”, say Kakkmaddafakka. “Axel wrote the songs on piano and Pish wrote in a little more clubbish way. Together with producer Matias Tellez (Young Dreams) they figured out a new sound for Kakkmaddafakka. It’s been a great working experience”. The first taste of that new sound is ‘Naked Blue’. In some ways, it’s not too great a leap from the band’s classic, established sound. Sparkling guitar riffs combine with piano lines for a warm, charming indie-pop track that glows with groove and comes paired with an enormous, singalong chorus that’s been a live favourite from the very first show they played it as [if they’ve not played it before I’ll adjust this line]. But it feels like something bigger than anything they’re written before, a Kakkmaddafakka song built on a more epic scale. A little bit more pure pop and less scrappy indie that before, it’s a shimmering indie-rock track that soars to new heights. As you can probably guess by the song’s themes, summer played a major role in inspiring it. Kakk say: “It was one of those songs that only took five minutes to write. The weather in Bergen this spring and summer made us uber-creative. I was laying on the balcony boiling and dreaming in the sun. Out of nowhere I felt the urge to go inside and play guitar. Five
minutes later I had the song. It just felt natural to go with as the first single! It represents the sound of this record! And we really like it a lot”. ‘Naked Blue’ is the first taste of the band’s upcoming fifth album, the follow-up to last year’s Hus, set for release on March 22. The band say the album’s themes include “relationships, tales from Bergen and mental health. I guess this is the most intimate Kakkmaddafakka album and the most honest album we have ever done”.
